Isogen Solo and Team Edition

Isogen®

Solo and Team Edition

What is Isogen® ?

Isogen is the world’s leading solution for the total automation of piping isometric drawing production and is the Hexagon Asset Lifecycle Intelligence division’s standard system for drawing piping isometrics. Isogen is bundled with Intergraph Smart® 3D, CADWorx®, CAESAR II®, Intergraph Spoolgen®, and Intergraph Smart® Isometrics. Isogen is also supported by all major piping design solution vendors who will either bundle Isogen with their product or will output one of the two Isogen data files – the PCF or the older IDF.

What is Isogen Solo Edition?

Isogen Solo Edition is a version of Hexagon’s Isogen software, designed for the automated generation of piping isometric drawings. The Solo Edition is tailored for individual users or small teams who require a standalone solution for producing piping isometric drawings. It offers a cost-effective and efficient way to generate piping isometric drawings.

What is Isogen Team Edition?

Isogen Team Edition is a version of Hexagon’s Isogen software for the automated generation of piping isometric drawings. It allows multiple users to process an unlimited number of pipelines from any source into detailed isometric drawings, making it particularly cost-effective for larger projects or organizations managing multiple projects.

Why Use Isogen Solo Edition / Isogen Team Edition?

These editions of Isogen automate the generation of precise isometric drawings directly from your 3D models, saving you valuable time and reducing rework. Whether you are working solo or as part of a team, Isogen ensures consistency, accuracy, and faster project delivery. With customizable templates and seamless integration into your existing design tools, Isogen makes your design process more efficient, helping you meet deadlines and enhance collaboration with fabrication teams—improving the quality and speed of your projects.

Who Uses Isogen Solo Edition / Isogen Team Edition?

Either software edition is ideal for companies using design solutions that do not include Isogen but can export piping data in PCF format. This typically includes designers working with solid modelling tools – such as Dassault Systèmes CATIA© or SolidWorks, PTC CREO®, Autodesk Inventor Professional, and others—to create 3D piping and tubing models.

Isogen Solo Edition is for individual users or smaller teams, while Isogen Team Edition is designed for larger teams requiring greater collaborative capabilities, and scalability for large projects. Both editions deliver identical results—high-quality, industry-standard piping isometrics for which Isogen is well known.

Benefits of Isogen Solo Edition / Isogen Team Edition

Automated Isometric Drawing Generation:

  • Saves time and effort by automatically generating piping isometrics from 3D models or design data (IDF/PCF files).
  • Eliminates the need for manual drafting, reducing human error.

High-Quality, Industry-Standard Output:

  • Produces consistent, standardized drawings that meet industry requirements.
  • Supports fabrication, inspection, and installation workflows.

Integration with Multiple Platforms:

  • Compatible with many design solutions, including Hexagon’s own tools (CADWorx, CAESAR II, Smart 3D, Smart Isometrics) and third-party CAD systems (like CATIA, SolidWorks, CREO, Autodesk Inventor Professional).
  • Works seamlessly with data in PCF/IDF format, even from systems that do not bundle Isogen.

Highly Configurable:

  • Offers extensive customization for drawing layout, content, symbols, and annotations.
  • Users can adapt the output to match company standards, project specs, or client preferences.

Scalability for Teams and Projects:

  • The Team Edition is optimized for organizations managing multiple users or large volumes of isometric generation.
  • Can process an unlimited number of pipelines efficiently.

Supports Downstream Processes:

  • Outputs are compatible with fabrication tools, including links to Numerically Controlled machine tools e.g. pipe cutting, bending etc., material tracking systems, and construction planning workflows.
  • Enables accurate bills of materials, and many other report deliverables essential for piping manufacture and installation.

Increases Efficiency and Delivers Cost Savings:

  • Reduces project turnaround time.
  • Minimizes rework due to standardized, accurate, and repeatable drawing generation.

How Isogen works

Isogen processes IDF (Intermediate Data Format) and PCF (Piping Component File) files by reading the detailed piping information they contain and automatically generating corresponding isometric drawings. Here is a breakdown of how that workflow typically works:

Input File (IDF or PCF)

These files contain all the necessary data about a piping system:

  • Pipe routing (coordinates, connectivity)
  • Component types (valves, elbows, flanges, etc.)
  • Dimensions and sizes
  • Materials and specifications
  • Line numbers, insulation, welds, and other metadata

Isogen Parsing & Validation

Isogen reads the IDF or PCF file and parses the data. It validates:

  • That the pipe routing is logical and connected.
  • That components are recognizable and supported.
  • That the data structure conforms to expected formats.

Drawing Logic & Layout

Based on the file contents, Isogen applies its internal drawing engine to:

  • Generate an unscaled, schematic-style isometric layout
  • Optimize pipe routing visuals (crossovers, offsets, etc.)
  • Position symbols (valves, tees, reducers) appropriately

Configuration

Using tools like I-Configure, the system applies:

  • Title block settings
  • Annotations (e.g., weld numbers, line tags, insulation codes)
  • Drawing styles and company-specific standards
  • BOM (Bill of Materials) formatting
  • Symbol libraries and dimensioning rules

Output Generation

Isogen outputs:

  • A 2D piping isometric drawing (typically in DWG, DGN, or PDF)
  • A Bill of Materials and other optional reports

Token-Based Licensing (Isogen Solo Edition)

  • Operates on a consumption-based model where each isometric generation (processing an IDF/PCF through Isogen) decrements a license token.
  • Tokens are available in batches of 500 or 1,000, providing flexibility for project-specific needs.

Dual Operating Modes

  • Isogen-R (Interactive Mode): Offers a graphical user interface for manual selection and processing of input files. Usual mode of operation when using Isogen Solo Edition.
  • Isogen-S (Automatic Mode): Functions as a service that monitors designated folders and automatically processes new IDF or PCF files upon detection. Usual model of operation when using Isogen Team Edition.

Comprehensive Configuration Tools

I-Configure:

Offers a visual interface for customizing and previewing isometric drawing settings, ensuring that all necessary details are included and configurations are ready for production use.

Symbol Editor:

Allows customization of 2D isometric symbols representing specific fittings, ensuring adherence to project or company standards.

Generating piping isometric drawing and report deliverables

Isogen takes a structured 3D representation of a pipe system from an IDF or PCF file and converts it into a 2D isometric drawing with all the detail needed for fabrication, construction, and inspection.
